Biography

Rodrigo Zamith is a media scholar whose research and teaching interests lie at the intersection of journalism and technology, with a focus on understanding the social implications of emerging technologies for how news is produced, distributed, and consumed―as well as the broader consequences of those shifts to public life.

Zamith’s research has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals and has been recognized through multiple awards from major academic societies, including the International Communication Association (ICA) and The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). He is also a Faculty Associate of UMass’ Computational Social Science Institute.

His most recent book, Journalism in the Age of AI (Polity Press, 2026) offers a critical look at what AI means for journalism by drawing on questions of creativity, democratic accountability, platform power, and human agency.

His teaching includes both conceptually-oriented and skills-oriented courses, including Data-Driven Storytelling, Introduction to Journalism, and International Journalism. Zamith has published multiple open-access books that anyone is free to use for non-commercial purposes. He has also received UMass’ Distinguished Teaching Award and its College Outstanding Teaching Award, in addition to being selected for multiple competitive teaching fellowships.
