Bio
Nick Hagar is a faculty member at the Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota. Their research examines how artificial intelligence is changing journalism, public information, and the institutions that produce and distribute knowledge. They are particularly interested in the design and governance of AI systems, the ways news organizations adopt emerging technologies, and the relationships between technological choices and audience outcomes. Nick’s work combines computational methods and system development, with an emphasis on producing both scholarly contributions and practical tools for journalists.
Before joining the University of Minnesota, Nick was a postdoctoral scholar with Northwestern University’s Generative AI in the Newsroom Initiative. They have also worked as a data scientist at The New York Times and a researcher at Meta. They received their Ph.D. in Media, Technology, and Society from Northwestern University.
