Bio
Marcelle Chagas is a Brazilian journalist, researcher, and founder of the Black Journalists Network for Diversity in Communication (Rede JP), a transnational network that works at the intersection of journalism, technology, diversity, and democracy. Founded in 2018, Rede JP connects more than 18,000 journalists and communicators across 80+ countries, strengthening inclusive information ecosystems through training, research, digital tools, and collaborative networks.
Her work focuses on artificial intelligence, information integrity, digital inequalities, and the impacts of emerging technologies on journalism and historically underrepresented communities. She is the founder and coordinator of GERATELAB, an independent research lab dedicated to studying communication, technology, and social inequalities, with a focus on community-centered approaches to digital transformation and AI governance.
Marcelle is a Mozilla Foundation Tech & Society Fellow (2024–2026), where she developed research on territorial disinformation, artificial intelligence, and community resilience in Brazil. She is also a member of the Columbia Women’s Leadership Network, a global network connecting women leaders committed to advancing social impact and innovation.
She is the creator of REPCONE (Digital Protection Network for Black Women Communicators), a pioneering Latin American initiative that combines digital security training, psychosocial support, and protection strategies for Black, Indigenous, and Quilombola communicators. Through Rede JP, she also leads the development of innovative digital infrastructures, including LATINAS AI – By and for Latinas, a multilingual conversational AI platform designed to support journalists, communicators, researchers, and human rights defenders with verified information, digital protection resources, and guidance on addressing online harms; and ComuniHub, a civic technology platform that connects journalists with opportunities, resources, and collaborative networks while reducing barriers to access funding, training, and public-interest technology tools.
At the Public Tech Media Lab, Marcelle will contribute her experience in public interest technology, AI systems for the public good, digital infrastructure, and the future of journalism in AI-driven information ecosystems. Her current work explores how community knowledge, diverse perspectives, and trustworthy information systems can help shape more ethical, inclusive, and accountable technologies.
