Seth C. Lewis, since 2016, has been the founding holder of the Shirley Papé Chair in Emerging Media in the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Oregon, where he is also Director of Journalism and Professor of Media Studies. In 2026, he will join the University of Virginia as the inaugural Elcan Jefferson Scholars Foundation Distinguished Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Media Studies. His research explores the social implications of emerging technologies like AI for journalism, media work, and public life. He has two forthcoming books with co-authors: one, for Polity Press (with Rodrigo Zamith and Tomás Dodds), analyzing what AI means for news and democracy, and the other, for MIT Press (with Jacob L. Nelson), exploring why Americans are so distrustful of knowledge institutions such as media, medicine, and higher education. He has published widely on many aspects of journalism, innovation, and technology, with more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and he has held visiting or affiliated positions at universities around the world, including Oxford, Columbia, Stanford, Yale, and Münster.
