Assistant Professor Digital Methods for AI Platforms, University of Amsterdam
Biography
I am an Assistant Professor of Digital Methods for AI Platforms at the University of Amsterdam, where I am also affiliated with the Digital Methods Initiative. After studying journalism and political science, I worked as a freelance editor for news outlets in the Netherlands before entering academia. My research interests relate to the dissemination and representation of political ideologies across social media and AI platforms. At UvA, I teach digital methods seminars and courses on digital investigations, focusing on detecting and navigating harmful, manipulative memetic trajectories of engagement with (political) news. I am fascinated by the platform-tailored ways in which audiences are nudged to follow ‘predefined’ participatory circuits of engagement that are orchestrated by platforms but that are also fluid. I am hoping to share tutorials and method recipes for detecting, assessing, and handling malicious memetic trajectories of ‘truthmaking and faking’.
I would love to collaborate with PTML members on the topics of AI source epistemologies. In that context, I am not only interested in source hierarchies that emerge from, for example, AI-powered summaries in specific (affectively charged) contexts, but I am also interested in how these epistemologies are governed by AI platforms and what kind of affective atmospheres emerge from that.
