Biography
Abdullah Mohaimen is a PhD student in Mass Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication. He is also a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the School. His research sits at the intersection of AI, digital media, health and environmental communication, and public-interest investigation, focusing on how emerging technologies and open information can advance evidence-based inquiry, accountability, and the voices of marginalized communities.
His research includes technological affordances, low-power AI, and climate justice among marginalized communities. He has also studied AI moderation, AI voice, digital activism, AI-driven health information, and the ethical implications of emerging technologies. His current work explores how AI-driven communication can address public-health and environmental challenges.
Before his PhD, Abdullah worked as a reporter for and as a newsroom editor in Bangladesh. He later spent nearly seven years at the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF), where he designed and managed programs in digital health, education, climate adaptation, and community development, working with more than hundreds of partner NGOs.
At the Public Tech Media Lab, Abdullah brings together his experience in journalism, applied research, and AI-driven communication to contribute to research on AI systems for the public good, open-source digital investigations, and the ethical implications of emerging technologies. He is particularly interested in how AI-assisted and open-source tools can support investigative journalism, environmental and health communication, and public accountability.
