Natali Helberger is Distinguished University Professor of Law and Digital Technology with a special focus on AI at the University of Amsterdam and member of the board of directors of the Institute for Information Law (IViR), one of the leading information law institutes worldwide. Helberger is an elected member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), and the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities (KHMW). She received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Fribourg.

Her research focus is on developing a societal perspective on the use and regulation of AI and digital technologies, and bringing different disciplinary perspectives together to inform law and policy making. She is the co-founder and director of one of the Dutch ELSA Labs (Ethical, Legal and Societal Aspects of AI): the AI, Media & Democracy lab. The AI, Media and Democracy Lab brings together researchers, media organisations, civil society and regulators to monitor the impact of AI in journalism and democratic processes, develop concrete technical solutions and evidence-based input for policy making. Natali regularly advices the European Commission, European Parliament, Council of Europe, OSCE, UNESCO and national governments, regulators and civil society organisations, and is currently elected member of the European Commission’s AI Advisory Forum.
