Bio
Emma Black Kamara is a Sierra Leonean journalist, science and environmental reporting advocate, and the Founder and Managing Director of the STEAM Reporting Network (SRN), an independent media organization dedicated to advancing public-interest journalism in science, technology, environment, agriculture, mining, healthcare, water, climate change, artificial intelligence, and innovation.
She is the Publisher of STEAM Chronicle Newspaper Sierra Leone and leads STEAM Chronicle Radio, STEAM Chronicle Magazine, and STEAM Chronicle Media, a specialized multimedia journalism platform producing evidence-based reporting, investigative journalism, data storytelling, and solutions-focused coverage of critical development challenges affecting communities across Sierra Leone and Africa. She also serves as Editor at Expo Times Newspaper Sierra Leone.
Emma has more than 10 years of journalism experience, including investigative reporting, environmental journalism, health reporting, climate change reporting, and newsroom leadership. Her work focuses on connecting scientific knowledge with communities by translating complex research and policy issues into accessible stories that empower citizens, support informed decision-making, and promote accountability.
Through SRN, Emma works to strengthen science journalism capacity in Sierra Leone by supporting journalists, promoting ethical reporting, and creating platforms that connect researchers, policymakers, innovators, and communities. Her reporting interests include environmental justice, sustainable development, public health, natural resource governance, climate adaptation, and the impact of emerging technologies on society.
As a Public Tech Media Lab Media Fellow for the 2026–2027 academic year, Emma will contribute her experience in science and public-interest journalism while exploring how artificial intelligence, digital tools, open-source intelligence (OSINT), and emerging technologies can transform journalism. Her areas of interest include developing practical AI tools for newsrooms, improving fact-checking and verification systems, strengthening investigative reporting workflows, supporting newsroom sustainability, and expanding access to reliable information.
Through her fellowship with the Public Tech Media Lab, Emma aims to build stronger collaborations between journalists, researchers, technologists, and communities while contributing to the future of ethical, innovative, and inclusive journalism in Sierra Leone, Africa, and globally
